Well-Used

Well-Used

You’ve had those days.

You know, the ones where you collapse into bed having given your all—and it feels fantastic?

Where your big meal tastes even better because you worked hard and you’re really hungry?

Where the thing you were trying to make happen happened, and people loved it even more than you imagined they would?

These days feel amazing because they’re what we’re made for.

Humans aren’t designed to just sit around in pure leisure.

We love to work hard—under the right conditions.

In other words…

We love to work hard as long as we feel well-used.

Being well-used means:

The work feels meaningful or connected to a larger purpose.

You can see progress, even if it’s slow.

The challenge matches your skill level.

You’re learning and growing.

The effort aligns with your values and identity.

There are moments of completion, accomplishment, or appreciation.

Unfortunately, for many of us, this well-used experience is rare.

More common—and exhausting not just to the body but to the soul—is this:

You’re working from fear, scarcity, or obligation.

The goal isn’t actually yours.

The work feels endless, with no visible progress.

You’re trying to prove your worth.

The challenge exceeds your current capacity for too long.

You’re depleted physically or emotionally.

You’re carrying unresolved conflict, grief, or stress in the background.

You have no recovery periods.

Success keeps moving farther away no matter how much you do.

T his a recipe for ending up tired and resentful.

It’s unfortunately common—and often normalized—in our modern world.

But I think most of us long to feel well-used.

So how do you get there?

It’s a skill.

You stop running on fear and start running on presence.

You say no more often so you can say the yeses that matter.

You feel all the feelings you’ve been avoiding by staying busy.

And you trust that your satisfaction is a meaningful dial on the dashboard. It’s one way your soul gives you directions.

Meaningfully yours,

Rachel
